TORONTO – Today, the Honourable Jim Karygiannis, Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt, helped GlobalMedic’s Rapid Response Team volunteers load emergency aid equipment and supplies bound for the typhoon-ravaged regions of Taiwan . At the height of the typhoon, parts of central, southern and eastern Taiwan was deluged with nearly 100 inches of rainfall causing severe flooding and massive landslides. According to Government of Taiwan’s latest casualty figures, the typhoon claimed 543 lives and 192 people are missing. “Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan on August 7th and 8th pummeling regions of Taiwan with heavy rains. It was the worst storm to hit the island in more than fifty years, displacing more than 25,000 civilians.” said Mr. Karygiannis. “These survivors are in desperate need of clean water. The GlobalMedic team is sending 2.8 million water purification tablets to provide much needed life-saving and life-sustaining aid.”
