GlobalMedic is proud to update you with our work to date in response to the earthquake that rocked Haiti on January 12th, 2010. In total, we deployed 20 Canadian volunteers over an 8 week period. These volunteers were primarily paramedics, police officers, engineers, and firefighters who donated their time away from family, friends and work, to put themselves in harm’s way to help other people in need. Their dedication is truly amazing and we would like to thank them for all their hard work and commitment to serving Haitians in need. Our work is being continued by our locally trained team of over 40 Haitians who are working day in and day out to provide clean drinking water and medical care.

It is with great sadness that we write to inform you that a tragic accident took the life of Glaizil Guinson, 26, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti yesterday.
Glaizil had been working with GlobalMedic and our partner ADRA since January 16th, as a part of our Eagle motorcycle team, providing clean drinking water from the back of his bike for the past 2 months. Glaizil’s passing occurred on his personal day off work. Glaizil’s death follows the loss of his wife in the January 12th earthquake. He leaves behind a 12 month old son and is survived by his brother and Aunt.
The loss of Glaizil is truly a tragic moment for our Eagles team and GlobalMedic. Glaizil was an integral part of our water purification team. He will be missed by our team and remembered for being the joker of the group, always laughing and brightening peoples’ day. Our hearts and thoughts go out to all his family and friends. We will miss you Glaizil.

February 13, 2010 (Haiti)

Today was the start of a Day of Mourning in Haiti.  Prayers were held throughout the country to mourn the over 200,000 people who lost their lives, as well as to celebrate life and the future of Haiti.
GlobalMedic continues to manage two inflatable hospitals operational in Carrefour at the Adventist University of Haiti.  On average we are treating 150 people a day at one hospital while the other is being utilized as a pre-op to prepare patients for surgery.  More than one month after the earthquake, people are still seeking treatment for their injuries.

GlobalMedic’s local motorcycle team, nicked named the “Eagles”, continue to expand their range by travelling to far reaching areas to provide clean drinking water to over 10,000 beneficiaries a day.  Mobile Trekker water purification units are strapped on the back of the motorcycles, which is the best means of transportation due to inaccessible roadways, and taken to remote areas to provide safe water.

Our other team nick-named “The Lions” continue to manage and maintain the larger water purification units located at the local University in Carrefour, providing for 15,000 people per day, as well as one mobile unit that travels throughout communities different communities in Carrefour and Port-au-Prince.

Between our different water purification programs we are producing over 110,000 litres of clean drinking water per day for approximately 40,000 beneficiaries daily.
Together with our local partner ADRA, we remain committed to the people of Haiti in a time of great need.

February 10, 2010 (Haiti)

Since January 14th, 2005, the GlobalMedic Rapid Response Team has deployed and rotated in 16 volunteers to Haiti in response to the recent earthquake. They have provided clean drinking water and medical aid to beneficiaries from Port-au-Prince, Carrefour, Leogane, Petit Guave and Jacmel.

Currently, GlobalMedic has two 22 foot by 42 foot Inflatable field hospitals operational in Carrefour, in the Adventist University which is home to approximately 15,000 registered IDPs and that number increases at night when people seek refuge from unsafe streets. Initially the hospitals were seeing approximately 300 patients per day, but that number has now decreased to approximately 150 patients per day on average. This is a good sign that the overall health of the camp is improving and the medical care being provided is having a very positive impact.  Additionally, we have been sending mobile medical team into areas that are not receiving regular access to medical care. Our medics have treated an average of 150 people per day while on these missions.

GlobalMedic is running a water purification program that utilizes different techniques to ensure that the maximum amount of beneficiaries are provided for. One important program we are running is mobile water purification unit. 15 motorcycles travel from our HQ each day with water purification units that operate off of 12 volt batteries. These motorcycles go to designated areas and provide reliable access to clean drinking water. We have also installed units in set locations from orphanages to churches to relief camps. In total there are 50 Trekker water purification units on operation and the program will be expanded to 60 in the coming days. GlobalMedic is also providing clean drinking water for over 20,000 people daily in the Adventist University in Carrefour, in association with our local Haitian partner, ADRA International. We also have a water unit that provides 64L/min of clean drinking water which is travelling to different destinations throughout Carrefour providing drinking water to people. In total, GlobalMedic has purified over 1.6 million litres of water since January 15th.

GlobalMedic is looking at expanding programs in the coming months. The first initiative will be to set up a field hospital in Jacmel which will be operational for a period of 12 months. This hospital will serve the area until a permanent structure can be re-built. GlobalMedic is planning to introduce a bio-sand program in Haiti. The program will focus primarily on the areas of Port-au-Prince, Leogane, Petit Guave and Jacmel. Biosand filters are low maintenance and require no electricity to operate. They kill 98% of all micro-organisms and bacteria. They will be installed in households and each unit will provide the daily water needs for between 8-10 people.

February 2, 2010 (Haiti)

A second team of 6 paramedics have been in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince for 1 week now.  GlobalMedic is currently operating 65 water purification units including 62 Trekkers, 1 Nomad, 1 Explorer; averaging over 100,000 litres of clean drinking water a day, and has distributed 5 million water purification tablets.  In the first 2 weeks of the earthquake, GlobalMedic purified over 1.4 million litres of water.

2 inflatable field hospitals have been set up in the most devastated areas providing health care to over 200 patients a day.

GlobalMedic is committed to working with the local community by training Haitians on the use and maintenance of the water purification units which will be left in Haiti.  We are also supporting local communities by contracting locals to assist us with distribution of water purification tablets.

January 19, 2010 (Haiti)

The team continued working in the hospital and operating and monitoring the water purification equipment that was previously deployed. In addition to this water units were added at the following sites:

*        2 trekkers at Pere Basil Moraux a catholic elementary school
*        1 Trekker pulled out of Bizoton 6 due to no water supply and put in Bizoton J3 Lakon Leys

*        Distributed 250,000 Aquatabs

January 17, 2010 (Haiti)

Today a Haitian team was trained to operate a large scale water purification unit providing over 26,000 people daily with clean water at the Adventist University. The IDP camp has spontaneously grown and keeps growing. At night people try to seek shelter in gated compounds to stay away from potential thieves and violence. Very insecure at night.

Doctor and medics continue to treat patients at the Adventist Hospital with new patients still arriving. Used 20 volunteers to clean up grounds of hospital to promote hygiene by taking away the garbage and improperly disposed of needles. Reorganized hospital patients into priority categories.  Established water point in hospital.

The water team distributed 250,000 aquatabs to different shelters and isolated areas. They restored clean water to an isolated village 30 min NW of our location. There were 3000 people in village and 1000 displaced sleeping on ground. Trained  local mobile medical team in trekker, providing a logistics officer was deployed from Toronto and set up a base in the Dominican Republic. The following supplies were also shipped:

                        - 4.75 million Aquatabs

                        - 95,040 PUR Sachets

                        - 66,000 ORS sachets

                        - spare filters for Trekker and Explorer

January 16, 2010 (Port Au Prince)

Two strong aftershocks were felt today. People are scared and sleeping on the street.

There is looting and banditry at night.

The team's doctor is working in the Adventist hospital doing general surgery with 2 medics assisting him at all times. The 71 bed hospital is seeing over 500 patients with more showing up every day. Fractures and infections are common. There are not enough medics or doctors to keep up and medical supplies are running out. Four Trekkers water purification units have been installed that are supplying clean drinking water to 2000 people per day including the hospital's patients, patients families and staff.

Over 20,000 people are seeking refuge on the grounds at the Adventist University in Haiti. The Explorer water purification unit is up and running producing 64L/min of clean water as well as several Trekker units. Water tablets are also being distributed. There are long line ups for water but everything remains orderly as of now.

January 15, 2010 (Haiti)

The GlobalMedic team crossed the border into Haiti this morning and is currently set up in Port-au-Prince at a university campus housing up to 30,000 displaced persons. Our medical team is working in a hospital and the water team has begun distributing water purification tablets. The team will be setting up an Inflatable Field Hospital in the coming days and deploying the water purification units.

Another shipment of Aquatabs, PUR and ORS has been delivered to Toronto's Pearson International Airport tonight to be shipped off to the team in Haiti.

GlobalMedic is deploying 5 members of its Rapid Response Team (RRT) to Haiti in response to the devastation caused by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake which struck 16 km outside the capital of Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010. Thousands of people are currently feared dead or buried under rubble.

The team will focus on restoring access to clean drinking water through the provision of water purification units, as well as restoring medical infrastructure through the use of a 22ft X 42ft inflatable field hospital. RRT members will train local aid groups on the installation, operation and maintenance of all gear so that it may be operational as long as needed.

In September, 2008, GlobalMedic deployed a four person Rapid Response Team to areas in Haiti affected by a very destructive hurricane season. The RRT distributed and installed 10 Trekker Water Purification Units, 1 Explorer Water Purification Unit and 1 million Aquatab Water Purification Tablets in the towns of Cabaret, Jacmel, Meyer, Lafond, Amba Lavie, Anse D’hainault, Cavaillon. The Aquatabs purified 1 million litres of clean drinking water while the water purification units provided the capacity for 45,000 people to receive clean drinking water daily.

If you would like to make a donation specifit to this Haiti deployment you can do so by going to clicking here and going to Canadahelps.org. You will have the option to choose where your donation goes to.
